Education
The educational system in the West Bank and Gaza Strip is underdeveloped
due to years of occupation and neglect. Common problems include
overcrowded classrooms, dilapidated school buildings and facilities,
outdated curricula, inadequately trained teachers, in addition to
closure of schools, and restrictions on movement for students and
staff because of the political conflict. A rapidly growing population
and limited finances further undercut efforts to improve educational
standards for Palestinian youth.
UPA works with local schools, orphanages, vocational training centers,
and universities in an effort to help strengthen the Palestinian
educational system. UPA-supported educational projects in the West
Bank, Gaza Strip, and Lebanon provide communities with modern educational
resources such as reading libraries, scientific laboratories, computer
centers, improved classroom facilities, and qualified, well-trained
teachers.
Educational dreams can become a reality through UPA's Scholarship
Program, providing tuition costs to hundreds of qualified students
attending universities in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. With long
term development of Palestine in mind, UPA encourages students in
technical fields including engineering, economics, and teaching
to apply.
