Events Manager (Washington, D.C.)

Part Time
Start Date:  March 1, 2018

2018 is going to be a big year for UPA.   We are seeking an Events Manager to spearhead the strategic direction and development of UPA’s 40th Anniversary celebration and fundraiser in Washington, D.C. next September, as well as sister events in Gaza, Ramallah and Amman.  This individual will work in collaboration with UPA’s staff, board and advisors, and will also be in charge of other artistic, social and educational events in support of UPA’s outreach and development strategy.

Primary Responsibilities:

  1. Spearhead all aspects of event development, planning and implementation, in collaboration with other members of UPA staff as appropriate
  2. Develop event budgets and work plans with clearly outlined tasks and deadlines
  3. Identify and cultivate relationships with stakeholders to guarantee events are successful and financially viable
  4. Cultivate relationships within the community at large to enhance sponsorship opportunities for individuals and businesses
  5. Secure event related sponsorships, both financial and in-kind
  6. Be present at all US-based events to execute event registration, breakdown, etc.
  7. As appropriate, cultivate, train and manage a volunteer base to support and help accomplish different event tasks successfully
  8. Work with UPA accounting to ensure that all vendors are paid in a timely manner and create a post-event expense report detailing costs and revenue

The best candidates will have:

  1. Excellent interpersonal skills
  2. Minimum Bachelor’s degree
  3. Minimum 3 years experience in a similar or related field with an outstanding track record of successfully executed events
  4. Superb written and oral communication skills
  5. Strong presentation skills and effective telephone presence
  6. Proven organizational skills and ability to multitask under tight deadlines
  7. Ability to work both independently or as part of a team
  8. Background, knowledge and interest in the Middle East/Arab world, particularly the Palestinian situation and history
  9. Knowledge of Arab-American, Muslim-American, Palestinian-American and Palestine-solidarity communities in the US
  10. Ability to travel if required
  11. Arabic language skills (a plus, but not required)

Grants Associate (Washington, D.C.)

Full Time
Start Date:  March 1, 2018

Our programs in the occupied Palestinian territories and in the refugee camps of Jordan and Lebanon have grown considerably over the last few years.  To keep up, we are expanding our grant development department and are also seeking some support with our fundraising and program functions. Under the general oversight of the director of grant development and in coordination with other UPA personnel, the Grants Associate will assist with all aspects of UPA grant development and grant reporting.  The Grants Associate will also support broader UPA fundraising and program functions through updating and maintaining the donor database, supporting in-house mailings, providing translation support where necessary, and supporting program payment processing.

Primary Responsibilities:  

  1. Conducting relevant background research on the challenges facing the Palestinian people
  2. Conducting research on potential sources of funding
  3. Conducting competitive analyses to determine what programs and services are already available.
  4. Drafting letters of inquiry, concept notes, budgets, budget justifications and full grant proposals as necessary
  5. Preparing comprehensive reports to funders in accordance with guidelines provided
  6. Conducting data entry for gift and contact records to ensure accurate and timely processing, tracking, and acknowledgement of donations.
  7. Supporting periodic in-house mailings and address corrections
  8. Supporting program payment processing

The best candidates will have:

  1. A Bachelor’s degree in a field related to UPA projects
  2. Experience writing concise and compelling pieces, as well as in-depth works such as research reports
  3. Strong command of Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel and Microsoft PowerPoint
  4. Background, knowledge and interest in the Middle East/Arab world and the Palestinian situation.
  5. Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  6. Strong presentation skills and effective telephone presence
  7. Proven organizational and time management skills
  8. Detail oriented, optimistic and thrives in a fast-paced work environment
  9. Ability to handle confidential information appropriately
  10. Proficiency in spoken and written Arabic and English
  11. Grant writing, grant reporting, and database experience (a plus, but not required)
